Dogwood Cane Corso
Sales Policy Print E-mail

We at Dogwood Cane Corso take placing our dogs and puppies very seriously. When adopting a puppy from Dogwood Cane Corso you are committing to a lifelong companionship. We want to ensure that our customers have done their research on the Cane Corso and understand the life long commitment. Even with the best breeding we can’t promise a great dog if the owner does not take over as the pack leader. Always remember this is a working breed and they need stimulation, therefore they are obedient and loyal because of their training as well as their breeding. We encourage obedience training and depending on your dogs energy level and your lifestyle you can also do activities like protection work, Schutzhund, herding, agility, fly ball, conformation, tracking, therapy work, rally and more! All dogs are different and each take to training differently. Make sure you find a trainer who fits your dog the best. Once you have received your puppy it’s a good idea to start in puppy obedience or give them a job to establish good behavior that will carry into adult hood.

SHIPPING/PICKUP OF YOUR PUPPY

We can ship your puppy to you at a minimum of eight weeks of age if you are unable to personally pick up your puppy. All puppies are checked by a licensed Vet before being sent home to the new buyer. Puppies must be checked by a licensed vet within three days of coming to their new home to ensure good health upon arrival. We take no responsibility after three days if the puppy gets sick from a communicable disease after that time.

The cost of shipping is usually $350 ($285 freight charge, $20 shipping certificate, $45 shipping kennel) We ship our puppies in a vari kennel, certified for use of shipping, that fits the puppy. For an older or larger puppy, the kennel and shipping cost will increase. If the puppy is 12 weeks or older there will be an additional $20 charge for a required rabies vaccine. When shipping your puppy we will provide the health guarantee, plenty of bedding, and proper food/water dishes.

If we feel that the puppy is not ready to go home yet due to health, weight, or maturity we will keep the puppy at our kennel for no additional charge. However, if the Buyer is not prepared to pick up their puppy when they are ready we will keep the puppy in our home for $15 a day. This includes food, socialization, play time, and general care. While your puppy is with us they will begin crate training and some basic training.

Once your final payment has been made and you have signed our contract and we have received it, then your puppy will be ready to come home to you or be picked up.

STUD SERVICE

We offer stud service to approved females only. The bitch must be at least 18 months old, have certified papers, and be hip certified. We want to ensure that the breeding is a good match so we will take a look at both dogs and help to determine which male is a good fit if at all. Please call for more details.

PUPPY CARE AND TRAINING

We will work with you and your family to make sure you get the right puppy that meets your energy and lifestyle. Keep in mind that even after all of that puppies are what you make of them. You have to be consistent and patient with your puppy. Once you bring them home we urge you to stimulate your puppy by hand feeding them and playing with their food while they’re eating so they understand you gave them the food and it’s a privilege to receive. Make noises while they eat, vacuum around them, drop pans in the kitchen, clap your hands, sing and shout around them, get creative! This will help desensitize them to scary loud noises and they will not learn to fear such noises as a thunderstorm or objects around your house. We like to take our dogs for walks right when a storm is moving in so the noise of thunder becomes a part of their walk and it doesn’t bother them. Don’t change your everyday household routine to your puppy’s comfort level. Take your puppy every where you can to teach them manners in public. Remember, you are setting an example to the public for your breed so encourage good behaviors and correct negative ones while they are young.

Leash training should start right when they come home. All puppies love to run and play, so the first couple of times you put their leash on they will more than likely fight and throw on the brakes or even better they will cry! Do not give into these behaviors and stay positive, eventually they will begin to associate their leash as a fun experience with you.

If you don’t want your puppy to develop bad habits never allow them in the first place. When we are house training our puppies the first rule they learn is that the kitchen is off limits. We achieve many positive results by doing this because they never learn to counter surf, dig in the trash, beg at the dinner table, or injure themselves from the stove or oven. They also learn to stay in certain rooms in our house and are not aloud to roam our house unattended, this is how precious items get eaten, potty accidents happen or they ingest something that could result in an expensive surgery or even worse, their death. We encourage and love crate training. We recommend a 48" heavy wire kennel. We prefer the wire over the hard plastic kennel because this is a protection breed and they like to feel like they can see their whole environment and still watch over their home and family. This becomes their "den" and it helps to keep them from getting into dangerous situations while you are not around. However, we always have plenty of entertainment in their kennels to keep them happy. We give our puppy’s pigs ears, curly Q’s, Tracheas, Bully Sticks, Raw Bones, Kongs with fun frozen treats in the center, even frozen veggies!

If you truly want a happy content dog for the rest of their life then walk your dog every day! If the dog is walking you, then you cannot possibly be walking the dog. Your dog should never be allowed to walk in front of you or pull unless otherwise invited to! This is where the Cane Corso stands above all others with respect to their pack leaders.

NUTRITION

At Dogwood Cane Corso we feel that nutrition is key to a hstart for any puppy. We have spent a lot of time researching different types of foods and the affects they have on large breed dogs. Large Breed dogs grow at a fast rate and if not carefully monitored they can have numerous health problems leading to life long problems.

We feed a food that has a protein between 22% and 28% and a fat content between 11% and 16%, to ensure a slow even growth. By feeding too high a protein to a large breed puppy it can lead to angular limb deformities, OCD or osteochondritis desicans, which is a cartilage growth defect that leads to lameness and may require surgery to correct. Panosteitis has been linked also to nutrition as has Hip Dysplasia and Elbow Dysplasia. They can also develop HOD or hypertrophic osteo dystrophy. We believe in switching our dogs diets up to keep them healthy and intereted in what they are eating. Right now we are feeding an Adult and Puppy formula found at Costco. It's all natural and no by-products, corn, wheat or soy. It's a wonderful food and our dogs love it and look healthy!

By signing our contract you are also stating that you have read our policies page and agree to all terms of this agreement.
